Getting older does not necessarily mean it is time for you to get out of the game. You may not be as fast or as agile as you were in your younger years, but kudos to you for staying active. Even though you are staying active, your body is still going through some changes as you age. Some of these changes can make you more vulnerable to orthopedic injury.
Be Aware of Your Body’s Physical Changes
Knowledge is power when it is applied. Being aware of those changes in your body that could lead to trouble can help you avoid problems. The aging process continues on some level despite all your good habits. Knowing about the changes that can affect your performance can help you be more cautious.
As the body ages, the maximum heart rate decreases. This tends to limit your athletic performance, since the heart cannot pump the same amount of blood as in the past. This also affects the body’s ability to heal itself. Recovery from injuries occurs slower.
Lung capacity also decreases with age. Strength and endurance become limited, as oxygen is not moved as efficiently anymore. This decrease in oxygen levels can also affect your decision-making capacity.
You may notice your reaction time is slower than before. This is due to a decrease in blood flow to the brain. The nervous system is not as quick to react or make corrections, and as a result, you become more vulnerable to sprains, strains and other musculoskeletal injuries.
Along with all these changes, aging also causes a slow decrease in muscle and bone mass. The tendons and ligaments lose some of their elasticity. If you feel you have lost some of your coordination or flexibility, these are the reasons.
Stretching before and after your routine will help your body stay in shape and reduce chances for some injuries. It is important to stay active as we get older, so keep doing what you enjoy. Stay healthy and active and listen to your body.
