Whether due to aging joints, injury or excess weight, Osteoarthritis can cause joint pain, swelling and stiffness, affecting one’s ability to participate in daily activities. Individuals might even complain about their “creaky joints,” especially later in the evening after repetitive use throughout the day. Ultimately, in those with severe Osteoarthritis, cartilage can wear down completely, resulting in pain at rest with limited functioning. Thus, to cushion the joints and provide better range of motion without pain, hyaluronic acid (HA) injections are a welcome alternative to ice, heat, and painkillers, not to mention invasive surgery.
Hyaluronic acid, or HA, is naturally produced in the body, and as a fluid, lubricates joints to keep them working smoothly (WebMD). Yet, over time, the presence of hyaluronic acid decreases, causing the amount within the joints to run thin. Therefore, the premise behind hyaluronic acid injections is that by replenishing the synovial fluid (hyaluronic acid), individuals can experience longer lasting pain relief and greater mobility (when compared to steroid injections). As hyaluronic acid provides much needed shock absorption, it is also believed to signal the body’s own production of HA, which preserves the integrity of cartilage and slows the progression and severity of Osteoarthritis. Furthermore, the latest data suggests that hyaluronic acid interferes with the compounds (prostaglandins and cytokines) that encourage inflammation.
Given the different brands of hyaluronic acid and varying treatment schedules, it’s important that individuals have healthy expectations in regards to their pain and overall functioning. This is because treatment using HA injections can take up to five weeks before patients experience its full effects. Even so, many report pain reduction and significant improvement in regards to their knee pain, while others have noted improvements in the hip, ankle and other joints following hyaluronic acid injections.
While there are other remedies to arthritis pain, many individuals have maxed out their usage of over the counter pain medications and/or anti-inflammatory prescriptions. What’s more is that steroid injections, though they provide faster relief from pain, do not promote long-term relief or the rebuilding of cartilage.
