Adipose Derived Stem Cell Therapy (ADSC) is a regenerative medicine treatment that harvests stem cells derived from your own fat cells. How is the procedure performed?
Adipose tissue or fat is easily harvested from the patient’s own reserves, usually belly fat, using a very small needle. The fat harvested, is then placed in a special processing unit which helps separate the pure adipose tissue from the remaining mesenchymal components. Then, using imaging guidance, the fat tissue rich in stem cells and healing factors is injected into the arthritic and painful joint. The advantage of fat is that it tends to remain in the joint for a longer period of time, instead of being reabsorbed by the body. This allows the benefits of the fat derived stem cells to be there for an extended period of time helping in both repair, replacement, and support of the damaged tissue.
Who is a good candidate of ADSC?
ADSC provides an alternative treatment for patients who have failed conservative treatment and do not want to undergo surgery or are not good candidate for surgery. It is generally used in more advanced cases of osteoarthritis where other treatments have not been effective. In addition, ADSC is used not only in osteoarthritis, but also tendonitis, rotator cuff tears, labral tears and meniscus tears.
